I Ching 28

Hexagram 28 – Dà Guò (大過) | Great Excess

Judgment (Overall Meaning)

Dà Guò represents a situation of imbalance—where something has become too extreme or is under too much pressure. The old structure is at risk of collapse, and decisive action is needed. This is a time to recognize when things have gone too far and make necessary adjustments. The wise person either strengthens what remains or lets go of what can no longer be saved.

Image (Symbolism)

A lake over wind suggests instability—water can overflow, and wind can scatter what is not secure. Just as an overloaded bridge may break, a situation that has been stretched beyond its limits cannot last. Either reinforce the foundation or allow change to take its course.

Line-by-Line Interpretation

(Each changing line highlights different aspects of dealing with excess and instability)

  1. Recognize early signs of imbalance – Address problems before they become too big.
  2. Support is weakening – If the foundation is crumbling, take action before collapse.
  3. Struggle leads to exhaustion – Holding on too tightly may drain your energy.
  4. A turning point approaches – What is too rigid must bend, or it will break.
  5. Act with wisdom and courage – Major shifts require bold but thoughtful action.
  6. Let go and rebuild – When something has fully collapsed, a new beginning is possible.
